This Bird Identification quiz — for novice and intermediate birders — contains photographs of over 100 wild birds that you will find in North America. All photos contain field marks that help identify the bird. If you love birding, this app is a must-have for your iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad.
There is a slight leaning toward Western birds in the pictures, but the choices are from around the continent. Is this good or bad? Well, it’s neither. Most of the birds in this quiz are found across all of North America. Many Western birds were included because their Eastern counterparts look very similar or they tend to show up on the East Coast. All the bird choices were made with certain identification qualities in mind.
When making an identification, keep in mind:
- Size — It is very hard to tell size on a 1-inch square screen (let alone through binoculars). Try to use references around the bird such as background.
- Hard parts — Bill, feet, legs, shape, etc. are things that won’t change with molt.
- Plumage — Feather color, crest, wing stripes, etc. are great secondary field marks.
- Jizz — the general impression of size and shape is what most advanced birders use. You don’t identify a friend by their nose shape, skin and hair color; you just know their jizz – the way they look.
We hope that this quiz will inspire you to explore bird identification further in a good field guide. Recommended field guides are authored by Kaufman, Peterson, Sibley and the National Geographic Society.
